Since the technology of FASTag has come into existence, travelling has become a lot easier and helps save a lot of your precious time. The days when approaching a toll plaza meant searching for cash and an assured waiting time, now, it is just a matter of seconds.
The technology of online FASTag has made things relatively easy, as it can be recharged quickly via your smartphone with the right application. I personally use a FASTag, and moreover, it has become mandatory now, as per the Government of India.
What is FASTag?
An electronic toll collection system, a FASTag, is basically a reloadable tag that is affixed to the windscreen of a vehicle. It allows for cashless payment of toll fees at toll places and automatic deduction of the toll fee without having to stop at the booth.
Moreover, it is linked to a prepaid account, and FASTag recharge online can easily be done via various payment methods such as credit/debit card, net banking, UPI etc.
So, when a vehicle passes through a toll plaza, it doesn’t have to stop, as the fees are automatically deducted via the RFID technology from the prepaid account associated with the FASTag.
How does it work?
FASTag simply works on the RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) technology. So, when the vehicle approaches the toll booth, a reader installed on its overhead gantry scans the FASTag sticker, which is equipped with an embedded microchip and an antenna.
It captures the vehicle’s unique identification number and other details, and further, the fee is deducted automatically from the prepaid account linked to the FASTag.
Then, the barrier opens, and the vehicle can cross without stopping. Lastly, the individual receives a confirmation SMS/Email with details of the toll transaction. This whole procedure hardly takes 5-10 seconds.
